Human ATMs take banking to rural India

Mumbai: The human teller machines are creating a revolution in rural India. A group of business corespondents with a laptop, wireless modem and fingerprint scanner open accounts, take deposits and process money transaction for the poor farmers and migrants in the state.

These business correspondents help the poor save their money. The accounts get 4 per cent annual interest and no maintenance fee or charges for deposit or withdrawal.

The account holders can withdraw money whenever they need.

There will be no transaction exceeding Rs.10,000 at a time to avid robbery.

There is an estimate of 60,000 business correspondents in India. They are not bank employees but earn commission for each transaction from the bank.
