New Delhi: Shantanu Gangwar is a 17 year old Class 12 student of Delhi Public School, RK Puram developed a smart walking stick for visually impaired.

The device has infra-red sensors connected to a motor. On reflection of infra red rays, there is a slight quivering of the stick telling us about obstacles in our path. The apparatus may be attached onto a normal stick if desired. Obstacles can be determined within a one foot perimeter.

He suggested the same idea to his Electronics teacher Desh Raj Dhingra, who supported his student. After that it took him six months to finish the stick.

The relatively inexpensive and simple object costs Rs 800.

He also wants to increase the reach of his invention to 2-3 metres and has also been contacted by firms for marketing the device. He has bagged the Council for Scientific and Industrial research (CSIR) Diamond Jubilee Invention Award for School Children 2010 which he shared with Ankit Kumar Mittal, a Class 12 student from Barnala in Punjab.

Ankit has invented a modified zip which is two piece lock. These two inventions were selected from 353 proposals.
