UP ranks thirds in slum dwellers in the country

Lucknow: The India Urban Poverty Report by United Nation Development Programme places Uttar Pradesh at fourth position with 44 lakh slum dwellers.

The survey it was also found that Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh top the chart with1.2 crore and 52 lakh urban poor respectively. The survey was conducted under the 58th round of the National Sample Survey organization.

The report for the Basic Services for Urban Poor (BSUP) projects under the centrally-funded Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, UP, reports suggests that only 46 per cent of the available funds are spend on this.

According to the ministry of housing and urban poverty alleviation data, ,  Central assistance of Rs 531.77 crore has been made available to UP, against detailed project reports received for 70 projects in seven cities of Meerut, Agra, Mathura, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi and Allahabad. Out of the 70 DPRs sent, 67 projects were given green signal by the centre.

The Centre provides assistance to state governments for the integrated development of slums, including development of cluster houses, and other basic amenities like clean drinking water supply, electricity connections and road networks, under BSUP.

According to the state government officials, UP has performed good but due to their inability to provide utilization certificates to the Centre in time they lag behind.
