India ranks a low 67th out of the 81 countries of the world having the worst food security condition.
India's GHI for this year was 23.7. Pakistan, Nepal, Rwanda and Sudan had better rankings than India, where asBangladesh, Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Congo had worse. While India’s situation has not worsened in the past few years, there has not been much improvement either. However the status is a bit better with the GHI falling in the range 20-29.9.
The International Food Policy Research Institute conducted its Global Hunger Index (GHI) for 2011. The GHI is made up of three indicants: the undernourished population, the underweight children and the under-five child mortality. According to The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) there are sudden and unexpected changes in the global food markets with 3 factors contributing to it: high usage of food crops for biofuels, extreme weather and climate changes, and large trading of commodities.
India is third on the malnourished children’s chart but only from the bottom,” says Purnima Menon of IFPRI. According to Seeta Prabhu, senior assistant country director, UNDP “India has issues of efficiency in health system delivery.” The UPA government has not been able to introduce a Food Security Bill in the monsoon session and there are arguments over who is poor enough to receive subsidized food grain.
