Jorhat: With an aim to protect the declining population of turtles, an NGO- Seven Look, has launched various awareness campaigns in Northern Assam.

The NGO has identified three pockets of Sivasagar district wherein three endangered species of turtles- Assam roofed turtle, spotted pond turtle and Asian leaf turtle, have been found.

The NGO is planning to create awareness amongst the people about the importance of these turtles, the threats faced by them and of the laws against hunting them.

The awareness will be created using various art forms like street plays, leaflet distribution, hoardings, art competitions, cycle rallies and eco-camps. Further brochures (both in English and Assamese) will also be distributed.

The campaign will be carried out at Lalitongkur and Ujantoli Beels in Panidehing bird sanctuary and at Taroni Beel at Sapekhati in Charaideo subdivision of Sivasagar district.

The reports have shown that the turtle population in the area is declining due to degradation of habitat because of human activity, hunting by local villagers for meat as well as killing for black magic and other superstitious practices.

The authorities in the NGO believe that the campaigns will create awareness among the people and they will surely contribute in protecting the population of the animal.
