States spent less than 40 pc of funds allocated for sanitation this year

New Delhi: While a latest report by United Nations shows that 56 per cent of the total open defecation in the world is in India, it has been found that the states are not utilizing its funds for sanitation.

While the central government released Rs.776 crore to the states to improve the sanitation condition under Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC), only less than 40 per cent had been used.

The Union Ministry of Drinking and Sanitation statistics shows that only Rs.293 crore has been used.

Andhra Pradesh tops the list in not spending the money followed by Orissa, Bihar, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

The ministry of drinking water and sanitation has a budget allocation of Rs.11,000 crore for this fiscal. The drinking water programme has been allocated Rs. 9,350 crore, while the remaining Rs. 1,350 crore is for sanitation programmes.
