New Delhi:Â A recent study shows that people who drink less than 2 glasses of water everyday are at the risk of developing abnormally high blood sugar levels.
The findings were based on a group of French adults between the ages 30 and 65 and had normal blood sugar levels at the outset. about 19% of them drank less than half a liter of water everyday and the rest drank around a litre or more. Over the next nine years a good number of people among the group developed high blood sugar levels and some of them developed type 2 diabetes. On looking at the participants according to their water intake, researchers found that people who drank atleast 17 ounces of water per day were 28% less likely to develop high blood sugar.
According to Lise Bankir, of INSERM,France, the findings show a correlation between water intake and blood sugar but do not prove cause and effect. One of the possible explanations could be that people who drink less water go for aerated sugary drinks and hence complain of increased blood sugar levels and weight gain.
Further studies are going on to prove the link, if any between water intake and blood sugar levels. The best thing to do would be to avoid sugary drinks and drink more of water.
