Gorakhpur area of Uttar Pradesh is reported to be the worst hit by the disease.
Expressing concern over the number of deaths, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had asked the Uttar Pradesh Government to submit a report on the matter in 15 days.
The Commission has asked for the total number of cases of encephalitis reported so far this year, the existing mechanism for review of the health calamities and the action taken by the concerned departments, especially the department of water and sanitation, to prevent encephalitis in Gorakhpur.
Meanwhile it had been found that the disease is spreading to Delhi and Chandigarh with cases reported from these areas.
Encephalitis is irritation and swelling of the brain, most often due to contaminated food and water, mosquito tick and other insect bites.
