The study was conducted on a total of 485 inhabitants aged between 65-100 years of the Greek island of Ikaria. All of them suffer from hypertension.
The result of the study indicated the effects of coffee on the health of the people as it aggravated high blood pressure. The findings from the study have been released at European Society of Cardiology Congress in Stockholm.
The study pointed out that the arteries of around 56 per cent of the total lot who drank between one and two cups of coffee a day had the best arterial health. Their blood vessels appeared to be functioning like that of younger people.
Dr Christina Chrysohoou, who led the study, pointed out that the moderate coffee drinkers usually consumed 25-50 ml of coffee a day. Though they were drinking strong Greek coffee but other types might work as well.
It was found out that ingredients such as caffeine and antioxidants may partly improve arterial function by increasing the ability to take up nitric oxide, which is impaired in hypertensive patients.
The study proves out to be beneficial for moderate coffee drinkers and might even encourage others to switch to coffee in order to have better arteries.
