Drink water before meals to lose weight

London: Drink two glasses of water before each meal to reduce weight, say researchers. The finding will help those who shell out a huge amount for weight loss programmes.

The researchers came to a conclusion after conducting a study on a group of 48 adults aged 55 to 75 for a course of 12 weeks. The group was divided into two- one group of dieters who drank water three times a day before meals and the other group who did not.

After 12 weeks, all of them lost weight because they were consuming low-calorie food. But the dieters who drank water lost five pounds more than the others.

Since the person drinks water just before the meals, there is less space left in the stomach for food. So the zero-calorie water takes the space for food and hence results in the loss of weight.

But at the same time, drinking excess water may lead to hyperhydration or water intoxication. Too much of water in the bloodstream will dilute the sodium plays a vital role in the fluid balance of the cells. This will lead to a situation called hyponatermia.

Symptoms of hyponatermia may be mild and can include bloating, nausea, headaches, and vomiting. More severe symptoms can include coma, brain swelling, respiratory arrest, and death.
