New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has given its nod for conducting the below poverty line (BPL) census.

The BPL census will segregate the BPL families from above poverty line (APL) families. Though Census ascertaining the total Indian population got over in February, the BPL census will focus on caste and religion which was not done earlier due to opposition.

The census is likely to begin in July 2011. The total cost of conducting the census is estimated at Rs 3,500 crore.

The census will be carried out in phases. The census will seek details from every household about its caste, religious identity, and economic situation.

The census once completed will provide authoritative data about how many people from backward castes and how many Hindus, Muslims, Christians and Sikhs live below the poverty line.

The government will use the data of the census to formulate caste-based reservation system.
