Mumbai: The beaches of Indian Ocean is worst for sea turtles, says a recent study by an environmental group, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

The study listed out 11 danger zones for sea turtles and five are the beaches of Indian Ocean.

The best beaches are in Australia, Brazil and Mexico.

Six of the seven species of sea turtles around the world were threatened with extinction, but the study for the first time provides a guide for strategizing where to push for protections.

The Olive Ridley and Hawksbill turtles, which nest on Indian shores, are an endangered species and there was a drive by environmentalists against the poaching and killing of these sea reptiles. The study also reveals that the turtles face other dangers.
