The panel will be headed by ornithologist and Bombay Natural History Society director Asad Rahmani. The decision was taken after many studies indicated that the electromagnetic radiation from towers might be affecting the creatures.
Many studies conducted earlier have pointed out the adverse effects of the mobile phone towers on birds and insects. It was also found out that the population of birds and insects was larger in areas where these phone towers are not installed than in areas which have them.
According to a study honeybees exposed to electromagnetic radiation from cellphones lose the ability to return to their hives and queen bees produce a lower number of eggs.
Many experts feel that phone towers are not the sole cause contributing to the declining numbers of the insects’ population. Increasing urbanization and new constructions are also predicted as the reasons as it leads to food scarcity and loss of traditional habitat.
The panel consisting of wildlife biologists and environment experts will analyse all studies from India and other countries conducted so far in the confined area. The panel is further expected to assess whether the allegations are correct or not.
