India elected for United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council

Washington: In a significant development, India along with 14 other countries has been elected for United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council.

The newly elected 15 countries will fill the post of 15 council members whose terms are set to expire in June this year. The countries will begin their term on June 19 and will serve for three years.

The other countries elected for the council includes Burkina Faso, Botswana, Congo, Benin,  Indonesia, Philippines, Kuwait, Czech Republic, Romania, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Italy and Austria.

India, Kuwait, Indonesia and Philippines have been selected under the as the Asian group of nations to fill seats in the council.

Further Burkina Faso, Botswana, Congo and Benin were elected under the African group of states.

While the Czech Republic, Romania, Italy and Austria were elected as part of the eastern European group, Chile, Costa Rica and Peru were elected as part of the Latin American and Caribbean group.

The Geneva-based Human Rights Council was established in 2006. The council is responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the world. The council consists of 47 states that address situations of human rights violation and provide recommendations to tackle them.
