Patna: The Bhagalpur central jail in Bihar has introduced a printing press costs Rs. 55 lakh. First of its kind, 100 inmates of the jail would be trained to operate the printing machine by the manufacturers free of cost.

The manufacturing firm is planning to give training to only the first batch of inmates. The trained inmates would later train others interested in working at the press. This process will continue so that the printing press could run without any external help.

Apart from this, the jail press would also help the department reduce its recurring expenses as the machine would be used for printing forms and registers which are at present supplied to the department by outside agencies.

During the last four years, many new features have been added to the state’s jails and they include computer training, painting classes, yoga sessions and bakery and handicraft training.

Bihar also topped in the country in 2008-09 in terms of money earned from the sale of products made by the inmates of state's jails. Bihar jails generated a revenue of Rs 10.76 crore, followed by jails of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh which earned Rs 10.36 crore and Rs 10.2 crore respectively.
