Orissa to introduce new legislation to regulate caste certificates

Bhubaneshwar: The Orissa government has decided to introduce a special legislation to regulate issuance and verification of caste certificates across the state.

The decision has been taken to overcome the problem of fake caste certificates.

The proposal to introduce the legislation was given by Tribal Advisory Council (TAC).

Under the legislation the issuance and verification of caste certificates being issued to schedules caste, scheduled tribe and other backward classes will be regulated.

The cases of fake caste certificate in the state are on a rise with people from general category obtain fake caste certificates to take benefits of reservations meant for minorities.

The fake certificate issue has been identified as one of the major reasons for ethno-communal violence in various parts of the state.

The state government has stringent rules to deal with the offenders. Those caught with fake certificates are dealt with criminal proceedings and the officials issuing the fake certificates are also strictly dealt with.
