Dharwad university to help farmers in onion cultivation

Dharwad: With onion prices fluctuating in the markets, the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) in Dharwad has come up with plans to help the farmers in sowing seeds.

UAS had conducted a study during the last 20 years to learn the nature of price fluctuation of onions in Belgaum. The study has predicted that the onion prices in Belgaum may fluctuate in the range of Rs 800-850 per quintal.

The monthly modal price data of onion from Belgaum regulated market was collected for the analysis and comparison during the study.

The study has also predicted that the prices of onion may fall towards Rs. 800 and Rs. 850 per quintal in October-November which is the peak harvest period of the crop.

Onion is one of the most important vegetable crop used in India. However the price of onion in the market is highly volatile because of demand and market pressures.

The onion price has touched Rs.25 per kg in September. The price had shot up to an abnormal amount of Rs.80 per kg in January this year because the shortage in supply and hoarding by the traders.
