While Andhra Pradesh has 1.38 crore landless agricultural workers, Bihar has 1.34 crore workers. Sikkim has got least (17000) followed by Arunachal Pradesh (18840) and Mizoram (26783).
Andhra Pradesh has 7.3 lakh women workers who are landless as against 6.4 lakh men workers.
The Minister of Labour and Employment Shri Mallikarjun Kharge gave this information in reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha
The Economic Survey 2010-11 says that agriculture sector accounts for 12.3% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2009-10.
The Government has come up with a number of schemes to provide social security to the unorganized workers, which includes agricultural labourers.
The Government launched the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana to provide smart card based cashless health insurance cover of Rs. 30,000/- per annum on family floater basis to BPL families ( a unit of five) in the unorganised sector, including agricultural labourers.
Another scheme Aam Admi Bima Yojana (AABY) was launched in 2007 with a view to providing insurance cover to the head of family or one earning member of rural landless households between the age of 18 years and 59 years.
