By April 7, 2019, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed fines that is double the total amount it has imposed in the whole of 2018.
Including a big-ticket Rs 500 crore fine on major carmaker Volkswagen, the fines imposed this year so far amount to close to Rs 873 crore under the ‘polluter pays’ principle.
Last year, the tribunal had imposed penalties of Rs 477 crore.
After Volkswagen, governments of Andhra Pradesh, Meghalaya and Tamil Nadu (100 crores each) were the ones subjected to the highest amounts of fines.
While Andhra Pradesh and Meghalaya governments were fined for preventing illegal mining of sand and coal, TN faced the ire for failing to control pollution and not restoring Chennai’s waterways.
Several of the penalties are to be challenged in the Supreme Court.
