About 7000 inmates of the Tihar prison in Delhi has been given mental health counselling under ‘Project Samarthan’ in a year, officials said.
The project, carried out by the prison administration in collaboration with NGO Mental Health Foundation and AIIIMS was aimed to check mental and behavioural disorders among the inmates.
Launched April 16 last year, the project was developed based on the guidelines issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Factors such as isolation from society, overcrowding, delayed judicial proceedings, and insecurities about future aggravate mental health problems in the prisons, according to experts.
The jail authorities say that the project helped reduce the violence and disobedience of instructions from the staff at the jail.
