While Delhi remains the most polluted capital city of in the world, with the air quality staying often at hazardous levels, a new survey of its residents found that most of them did not understand the Air Quality Index.
The survey of 509 residents, conducted by the United Residents Joint Action (URJA). a collective of the city’s resident welfare associations and ARK foundation found that about 93% of them did not understand the AQI.
About 89% of them were unaware of the air quality monitors installed in their area. The people being surveyed had such a monitor installed in 2 km of their location.
While 58 per cent respondents said that they were affected by pollution, 48% said they were not.
According to the Air Quality Life Index developed by the University of Chicago, Delhiites lose about 10 years of their lives due to the high level of pollution in the city.
