Pope Francis, head of the Catholic church, has made a statement against capital punishment, saying that ” a punishment that is not open to hope is not Christian and not human”.
Taking the toughest stance against capital punishment of any pope in the history of the Church, he said so during a pre-Easter foot washing ritual at a prison in Rome.
Francis has broken traditions by travelling to institutions instead of conducting the ceremony at Vatican. and washing feet of women and non-Christians.
