Somaliland votes in presidential elections

Voters in the Somaliland autonomous region of Somalia voted in Presidential elections on Monday.

While this was the last term for the incumbent president Ahmed Mohamud Silaanyo, Muse Bihi of Silaanyo’s Kulmiye party, and Abdirahman Iro and Fasyal Ali Warabe from the opposition are competing to succeed him.

Somaliland is a region that has been waiting for international recognition for last 26 years.

International Election Observer Mission (EOM) to Somaliland with 60 observers from 27 countries is monitoring the elections.

The region that broke away from Somalia in a 1991 civil war, and having a long coast to the Gulf of Aden is vital internationally for its role in preventing piracy off the coast.

The west and African countries say the formal recognition of the country should come through negotiations with Somalia from which it broke away.
