The Philippines, the military and other state bodies have stepped back from carrying out the bloody war on drugs, which has resulted in thousands of killings in the last 15-months.
Following an order from president Rodrigo Duterte, only the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) is to continue with the campaign.
Police Chief Ronald Dela Rosa said in a statement that the Philippine National Police (PNP) will focus on street crime after it terminated anti-illegal drugs operations with immediate effect.
PEDA has 1,800 staff which constitute just over 1% of the 160,000-strong national police. This scale down is expected to bring down number of killings.
Over 3,900 “drug personalities” have been killed under the deadly campaign, with most of it being extra judicial killings.
