Over 300 million people across the globe suffer from depression, while more than 260 million are living with anxiety disorders, the combined cost of both the disorders is one trillion dollars a year in lost productivity, says World Health Organization.

“Employers and managers who put in place workplace initiatives to promote mental health and to support employees who have mental disorders see gains not only in the health of their employees but also in their productivity at work,” it said while placing mental health in the workplace as the theme of World Mental Health Day 2017, on October 10.

“a negative working environment, may lead to physical and mental health problems, harmful use of substances or alcohol, absenteeism and lost productivity.”it added in a statement.

WHO urged work places to understand the needs of individual employees, and to promote good practices that protect and promote mental health in the workplace.
