Under the farm loan waiver scheme of the Uttar Pradesh government, over 17,260 farmers received loan waiver certificates for only ₹1,000 or less.
The government had promised to waive off up to Rs 1 lakh.
4,814 of those 17,260 received just ₹1 and ₹100,while 6,895 of them received amounts between ₹100 and ₹500.
A government statement said that 11.28 lakh farmers received waiver certificates of more than ₹10,000 each, and 41,690 received those for amounts between ₹1,000 and ₹10,000.
When pressed for a clarification on the reason for meager amounts of loan waiver, the government issued a vague clarification that this was because of waiver of interest components, reported The Hindu. “Due to this, in some cases the amount reflected is extremely low,” the statement said.
The decision to waive off farm loans was announced in April this year, and it was expected to cost ₹30,729 crorefor the government.
